When it comes to choosing a beautician, there are so many options out there – a simple Google search for your area is a great place to start, but how do you know which one to pick? In these difficult financial times, it’s tempting to go with the cheapest – but my advice is always choose a qualified beautician, and never start with the price.

Whatever treatment you’re looking for, you’ll be putting so much of your welfare into their hands. It’s vital that they know what they’re doing – and that you can trust them to have your health, safety and wellbeing at the heart of everything they do. If your beautician holds the right qualifications, you can feel reassured that they know the importance of this too.

But what are the risks of going with someone who doesn’t have those all-important certifications? Let’s have a look at why you should always choose a qualified beautician, and what can happen if you don’t…

Expertise and Knowledge

Qualified beauty therapists undergo rigorous training to understand skin types, physical conditions, and various beauty treatments. We’ve got in-depth knowledge of the products we use, the right techniques, and a raft of safety measures, to ensure you’re receiving appropriate and effective treatments that are right for you – with minimal risk of adverse reactions or side-effects.

A qualified beauty therapist should also be a good communicator of that knowledge – they should conduct thorough consultations to understand you, what you want from your treatment, and any concerns that either of you have, before they recommend the right treatment for you. They are taught the importance of effectively explaining procedures, what the expected outcomes are, and aftercare instructions to make sure their clients are safe and happy.

An unqualified person will have limited knowledge of these matters – which could pose a serious risk to your health if they get it wrong.

Safe Practices

There’s so much to be aware of when dealing with the products we use, and the procedures we perform – for very good reasons. There are strict safety protocols to follow that prevent adverse reactions (see my recent blog post on patch tests for an example of this). We know about proper hygiene and sanitation procedures for tools and equipment, minimising the risk of skin irritations, infections, allergic reactions and cross-contaminations. We understand the dangers of using products that have passed their expiry date. You should be cautious of any therapist who doesn’t treat these practices as a top priority.

We also use quality products and equipment that have been tried and tested for their performance and safety – meaning you get high-quality treatments with the best results.

Commitment

Beauty therapy is always evolving, with new techniques, products, and technologies emerging all the time. A qualified beauty therapist is in it for the long haul – they’ve demonstrated their commitment to this as a career, and to investing their time and resources into their ongoing education in it. They are always looking for any new training they need to stay updated with the latest trends and advancements, enhancing their skills and expertise, and keeping their knowledge current.

Professional Standards, Ethics and Insurance

Qualified beauty therapists adhere to professional standards and ethical guidelines set by industry organisations and regulatory bodies. They prioritise their clients’ wellbeing, confidentiality, data protection and integrity, maintaining professionalism in all aspects of their practice – which includes having the right insurances in place to protect them should anything go wrong. If the therapist hasn’t got insurance, it usually means they are not qualified – so you should always ask to see their insurance documents. Be suspicious if this seems to be a problem.

It’s Not Worth the Risk

If you’re struggling to choose a therapist, please take it from me: it is always best to do your homework, and go with a beautician who’s appropriately qualified for the job. This can often mean that the prices of a qualified practitioner are higher, but there’s a good reason for that – you’re receiving the best care from someone who’s invested their time and resources into a career in the industry, and that’s what you’re paying for, as much as the treatment.

There’s so much at stake here, from something as small as a minor skin irritation to loss of your eyesight if something goes wrong – and remember, if their prices are too good to be true, it could be because they’re hiding a significant risk to you.

My Qualifications

Always Choose a Qualified Beautician

I’m proud of every qualification I’ve achieved – starting with my earliest certificates, as a VTCT Nail Technician issued in my maiden name! I am a qualified VTCT beautician too, and as I’ve expanded my services over the years, I always have the appropriate certification in place first to keep you safe, before I launch any new treatment.

So when you’re deciding who to trust with your beauty treatments, you should always choose a qualified beauty therapist: and you can be confident that you’ll get safe, effective, and personalised care from a knowledgeable professional, committed to your health and beauty goals. And when you choose a qualified mobile beautician like me, you’ll always know who you’re getting, and how we both like to have things done – which is not always guaranteed at a salon with different staff coming and going!

So if you’d like to book yourself in with a qualified mobile beautician who’s always got your health, welfare and beauty at heart, have a browse through my Treatments and Prices – I’m looking forward to treating you soon!
